Exploring trade cooperation between the Pacific Alliance and South Korea

Funded by the Korea Foundation through its Policy-Oriented Research Grant, this project was co-authored with Dr Ramón Pacheco Pardo, KF-VUB Korea Chair at the Brussels School of Governance (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). The research analysed the evolution and prospects of economic relations between South Korea and the four members of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru), comparing trade, investment and cooperation relations across the four countries.

The project sought to fill a gap in research on Korea–Latin America relations through the analysis of trade, investment and cooperation data, complemented by surveys, meetings and in-depth interviews.

Project objectives

Comparatively analyse the evolution of trade, investment and cooperation between South Korea and the members of the Pacific Alliance.
Examine how public and private actors view trade agreements, and the opportunities and challenges of the bilateral economic relationship.
Identify similarities and differences across the experiences of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru in their economic engagement with Korea.
Assess the scope for deepening cooperation between Korea and the Pacific Alliance, both bilaterally and at the regional level.
Formulate policy recommendations on trade, investment, economic cooperation, science and technology, trade facilitation, and educational and cultural exchange.
