Global Political Economy from Latin America

Economía Política Global — Latinoamérica (GPE Network) is a research and academic collaboration initiative devoted to studying the transformations of the global political economy from a Latin American perspective, with particular attention to the relations between Latin America and Asia.

The initiative builds on more than a decade of work developed initially through EPIC (International Political Economy in Colombia), led by Ralf Leiteritz, Carolina Urrego-Sandoval and Gabriel Jiménez, with the aim of strengthening research, teaching and dialogue on International Political Economy in Colombia and Latin America. Our purpose is to produce knowledge on Global Political Economy from Latin America and to strengthen the participation of researchers from the region in the discipline’s main international debates.

This trajectory includes regional workshops on the state of the discipline in Latin America, research projects on economic relations between Latin America and Asia, and the publication of two reference books for undergraduate and graduate teaching: Global Political Economy: Problems in a Transforming International Order (SAGE), co-authored with Jean-Marie Chenou, and Economía Política Internacional en Latinoamérica: teoría y práctica (Editorial Javeriana), edited together with Gabriel Jiménez Peña and Ninfa Fuentes, with contributions from seven Latin American researchers.

Building on this foundation, GPE Network consolidates a research agenda of its own, devoted to understanding how the transformations of the global political economy are reshaping trade, development, geoeconomics and the relations between Latin America and other regions of the world. Through rigorous research, international collaboration and dialogue with public and private actors, the initiative seeks to produce knowledge that contributes both to the advancement of the discipline and to the design of public policy and international engagement strategies for the region.
